Commissioned by TJX Europe for the project – the size of which is equivalent to around 16 rugby pitches – Chalcroft oversaw the fit out of the newly-constructed site in Knottingley, West Yorkshire. As Principal Contractor, scope of works included managing the installation of a three-storey mezzanine structure, sprinkler and security systems and full mechanical and electrical fit out, including equipment packages such as pallet racking and mechanical hanging rails through to air tube systems and IT installations. Chalcroft managed the co-ordination, health & safety and programme management to ensure the project was completed on time.
TJX Europe, the leading retailer and operator of the TK Maxx and Homesense brands, began processing in the new state-of-the-art building on 13 August. Significantly increasing processing capacity in-line with TJX Europe’s ambitious growth plans across Europe, around 600 existing employees transferred from the old site in Castleford to the new facility in Knottingley, which will create an additional 2,000 jobs for the area over time.
Peter Evans, Project Manager at Chalcroft, said: “From our experience in the retail and logistics sectors, we know that the way people shop is changing – meaning the retail supply chain has to be agile enough to respond. By managing multiple elements of the project, including the many trades involved in the installation, we were able to ensure the project was completed to the highest standards and delivered on time. The new warehouse provides TJX Europe with flexible long- and short-term storage options to ensure the available space works as hard as possible – as well as providing much-needed room for expansion.”
